Hello. My freezer suddenly quit freezing. 1st noticed when the ice coming out of ice dispenser seemed to be melting. I took the cover off the coils in the freezer and there was some frosting at the bottom of the coils. The fan is running. I then took the cover off the rear of the unit & the compressor is running [very warm] and the fan is running as well next to the compressor. Is this an issue of low freon [considering the age]? If so, do you have an idea of the cost to recharge the unit? Thanks, in advance, for any help you can give me.

Yes it sounds like a low freon problem.
Also could be a partially plugged orifice.

Here is a link, take aq look at the example pictures part way down the page.

Re-filling the unit will be expensive.
You have a leak somewhere so that also has to be found and repaired.
Finding a slow leak may be very difficult and it may even be a compressor leak.

Often it makes more sense to put the dollars toward a new unit.

Thanks Denman, I really appreciate the help. I came across [luckily] a brand new Stainless SXS auctioned off from Lowe's for a ding in the cabinet for $500 so I snatched it up. After pulling the old unit out to the garage I cleaned it up and do not visibly see a leak but may not be where it can seen. Will let my nephew [he is in refrigeration] look at it to see if it is worth salvaging. But, hey, I really do Thank you for the input.

Thanks a bunch buddy;)

You are welcome.

If you have the time could you post what your nephew finds.
Then when others search for a similar problem they will see what actually worked instead of just suggestions about what could be the cause.
