I was on my second load yesterday and the washer shut down without completing the cycle and I noticed a burnt electronics smell. I waited a hour to let it cool down and I started it back up. Last winter I had the same problem with the drier, I ran it until it died, it ended up being the motor bearings that went bad and finally seized. I would like to figure out whats going bad on the washer so I can get the parts and fix it at my leisure before it dies. Can you guys give me some ideas of what it could be and what to look for? My first guess would be the motor/bearings.

Since it started back up it seems like the motor is the problem, with its internal protection device shutting it down when the problem occurred.

This might be just a one time problem, so keep using it, but if it recurs try replacing the motor. It is also possible something in the transmission got hung up and caused the motor to overheat.
