Thanks Gene,
you probably are right. if I replace the timer and I have the same problem what would be your next best guess? I have run the timer forward manually and have engaged the wash mode with no problem, but when it comes to drain, rinse and spin, i can just hear the timer ticking along just as normal. Do you think it the contacts on all settings that is bad on the timer? or is there some solenoid that kicks in the motor to drain? and spin?

Another possibility is a bad motor. You can use this wiring diagram to check the motor windings. Gene.

thanks gene,
if the motor is bad why would it work fine with the wash cycle? seems to me the contacts in the timer that kicks in the pin that shoots into the pump and to activate the motor to pump and then spin. is there a transmission in this unit? is there a way to test the transmission?

The motor is reversible and it rotates in different directions for wash and spin. It has two separate windings for that.
If the motor is silent, it has nothing to do with transmission.
Gene.

thank you gene for all your advice. one final question: what would allow the motor to work in one direction and not allow it to work in the other direction? The timer? some loose of broken wire?
Thanks for all your input, I feel ready to troubleshoot with confidence
