I have a 20 y/o washer - Kenmore Heavy-Duty portable (110.84870100) that will not drain. The agitator works fine. When I first had the problem (not draining) I tried to get it to drain in different modes with no luck. Then I started to smell it (burning electrical), that is when I unplugged the unit and started disassembling the machine to see if I could diagnose the problem.

I was able to remove the top and side panels. I removed the pump and it seems to move OK.

I put the pump and one side panel back on. I propped up the top with the door clamped shut (so the switch was closed). When I started it (at the end of the cycle), the tub spun but...there was a spark at the bottom of the timer and a puff of smoke (and the smell). I immediately turned it off and unplugged the unit.

I guess my question is, is it the timer unit or could something in the motor be causing the timer to arc. Since a new timer seems to be something that I would have to order and would cost $110-$130 I am a little hesitant to just replace it to see what would happen.

I do have some incentive to repair the current unit. It is in my basement. Not only do I have the stairs to contend with but I have since built several shelves that would have to be removed to get the old unit out and a new one in (lots of expense, days of work)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I need you to clarify something for me,

As I understand this, the washer would or did fill with water and wash the clothes, but when it got to the drain and spin cycle it did nothing, the motor didn't hum or turn or anything, and the drain pump never ran ?

Do you know if the arc was due to your timer and wires touching the cabinet ?

I'm thinking, at this point, your motor was OK and you probably had a bad timer,or lid switch to start with.

Are there any other symptoms or problems, that you're aware of ?

:) :) :)

Originally I went to take the clothes out of the washer and it was still half full of water. I tried to put it on the spin cycle in a couple of modes and the tub would spin but it would not pump out the water. Then it started to smell so I stopped trying to get it to work and started doing some research.

I took off the top and sides. Pulled the pump and checked it and it seems to move OK. When I tried it again I saw the sparks and smoke (no exposed or touching wires) and the tub spun until I shut it off again (1-2 secs).

Someone suggested that I check to see if the motor turned without the pump attached (it's direct drive). I pulled the pump off and tried it again. This time the timer popped once and then nothing. No motion, no sound, no smoke, no humming, nothing. When I turn the dial, I can hear the valves open (I have the water turned off) at the appropriate times but when it is suppose to be spinning and draining, nothing. The smell seems to be the timer and not the motor.

At this point,

I'm sure you need a timer,

Part number: AP2906416
Part number: AP2906416

The timer in your machine was the most likey suspect from the start.

I just wanted to eliminate some other possibilities.

I'm pretty sure you have, based on the information you've given, so far.

Under the circumstances, you may want to repair the unit, even though it is older, it sounds like it has been treated well, and could last a few more years, when you're ready to remodel again(lol).

Good Luck,
:) :) :)

Apparently it was the timer. I replaced it and it seems to work fine now.

Thanks
