once starting igniter comes on and gas comes out and ignites. flames only last 5 seconds then nothing for 2 or three minutes. cycles on and again, igniter glows and gas is lit and burns for another 5 seconds.
what possible problems would create this issue

I'm not an expert by any means but it sounds like you need to replace the coils.
The pros on this site are top-notch so please don't do anything until they chime in with their recommendation.

what possible problems would create this issue The first thing you may want to do in such situation is to make sure the dryer exhaust line is clean all the way through the outlet and the blower wheel is not broken. Sounds like the dryer overheats due to insufficient air flow. Gene.
