The washer fills normally, but doesn't agitate, sort of clunks like stripped gear.
Spins ok and empties water but with a howl. Guides seen confusing, one says it might be motor assembly but others say transmission? Big difference in time and difficulty of repair. Any help appreciated.

Sounds more like the tranny as the motor you say works in spin mode.
