My washer goes into spin cycle and will start spinning and stop and then start spinning again. Clothes remain wet. It does drain.

If you will post a model number someone may be able to help you. Also, a more detailed description of the problem, such as when does this happen would aid us. Does it do this only in spin mode or does it do this when it is filling or agitating.

MAV3855Aww Rev 27 This happens during spin cycle. It spins and drains, then during spin it will seem to stop and start spinning as if whatever is spinning it loses contact.

The first thing to do with these Maytag models when there is a spin problem is to change out the thrust bearing, this part here. Note the nice video.

Part number: AP4009132

So, should I rule out the transmission? Everything else seems to work fine except spin cycle.

I think so, if the thrust bearing fix doesn't cure the problem the timer may be suspect.

Now suddenly the washer won't agitate in wash mode but I can hear the motor running and the timer ticking thru the cycle.

Well now it does sound like the transmission, although I still think the timer is a possibility. If you want to try and change it out and order the timer from this site you can return it if it does not fix the problem.

It does agitate in extended rinse cycle, but is making a squeaking sound as it does. I am going to pull the thrust bearing and inspect for damage
