Had a similar problem with a top loader, 8 year old Kitchen Aid washer just today. The timer stopped timing down at the very beginning of the rinse cycle. Thought at first $135 timer was bad. Nope, it was the lid switch that had fallen apart. Snipped it out, tied wires together, voila problem solved. We never have any young children around our washer so I doubt I'll go to the trouble of replacing this $22 part.
