13 yr old side by side ge freezer side makes ice but the ice cream is soft. I read on this forum ice cream needs a lower temp (around 0) then ice.

I have:
cleaned coils.
removed back panel in freezer and no frost build-up on coils.
temp setting at lowest level for freezer

house typically in 70s although have had some hot days (no ac in house) last week but in the 70s for the past few days inside.

ref side appears to be ok and setting just below middle value of 5.

any suggestions appreciated.

Also: freezer door seal appears to be in good shape. no damage visible and can't feel any cold air leaking.

Clean the condensing coils in the back, just might be your problem.

If the condenser coils are on the bottom, parts number :

Part Number WR84X188 (AP2076737) replaces 310000, AH309523, EA309523, PS309523, WR84X10018, WR84X0188.

I've given that a try. If I have the wrong item can you point me to the condenser coils. Other then a small access in the back on the bottom that provides access to the fan and condenser the unit's back is closed.

Do these ever lose a charge?

Remove the front panel under the door and clean the condensing coils there.

Thanks for update.

There was some buildup but not too significant. Cleaned that a earlier but still having an issue a few days later.

Remove the back freezer panel and let the fridg run, if you only get partial frost on the evaporator coils, you have a refrigerant leak.
