My kenmore washer goes through the wash cycle normal but when it gets to the spin cycle, it won't spin. It drains the water but doesn't start spinning. If I open and close the lid, then it will spin and finish the cycle. Am I looking at a problem with the neutral drain assembly?

Yes, this washer has a neutral drain transmission which should pause for a few seconds during the drain to engage the spin. The correction is to replace the timer. - The timer Part number: AP3131136
