At first sign of a problem, the freezer would thaw. It could easily be fixed by turning the control to off and then turning back on. Pain, but it worked for a while. Now everything in the refrigerator is frozen solid...and the freezer too. Could it be the thermostat, or is it something far worse?

It seems like a fridg. low on refrigerant. Get a tech to look at it.

I just started having the same issue. This is a refrigerator only (no freezer section). It is 9 years old next month. Until this point, it has worked perfectly, and there is not a scratch on it. A new one is $200, and the compressor from Sears is $133 (could that be the issue?). I'd like to just fix it myself, but have no way to diagnose it. It runs for a couple of days, then starts to freeze everything, and the thermostat is set to its warmest setting. Kenmore Elite compact refrigerator model #56491499100.

Doubt very much that it would be the compressor.
The original poster had thawing, yours is just getting too cold.

The most likely culprit is the thermostat.

Thermostat should be inexpensive enough that even if that is not it, it won't be a costly error, right? And it should be easy enough to fix myself. Will it just be the control unit itself inside the fridge, or is there more to it?

No should not be a difficult repair.
Looks like Sear wants $32.01 for it.
They do say this is a substitution but will fit just looks a little different.

Call AppliancePartsPros and see if they can give you a better price.
You unit does not come up online but they should be able to get you the part.
