Emma, You most likely have a burnt drive belt. A classic description, you gave. Part number: AP4025855
Part number: AP4024902
It's not that hard to replace: Remove the front panel(2 screws on the front panel). Pull front panel out at the bottom until it unhinges itself. Raise front of washer high enough to reach under(4 to 6 inches). Remove pump belt(runs across front of machine). Remove drive belt(runs from left front corner to center of unit). Lubricate the motor mount rollers on the left corner of the base, with vaseline, liberally coat . Reverse procedure to install belt(s) and test unit for operation. You don't have to replace both belts as a rule, but you may want to, I would reccomend it at this point. :) :) :)

Did you adjust the belt properly, and check, the motor rollers as I suggested ? First thing, Unplug the machine, and open the lid. There is a 3/4" gap between the top of the spin basket and the tub cover(the part you see when you open the lid),look or feel for an article stuck between the tubs(usually a sock). Was everything working proper before the clunking noise ?

Don't run the machine until you get the proper belt installed, you can create more problems. Thanks for purchasing the parts through AppliancePartsPros.com, I'm sure you'll be happy once you get the proper belts installed. :) :) :)

Emma, The odor should go away with usage . It's actually, residual rubber left on the pulleys from the previous burnt belt. I'm sure you'll be fine. :) :) :)
