Thanks for the reply. The original problem (and current) is the dishwasher fills up but the does not start the cycle it just shuts off.

So I followed the procedure in this thread to clean out the Chopper. I did not take the pump motor out, looks like the chopper only fits one way. I inspected the check valve and it looked ok so I put it back. Could the rubber be fatigued even tough it looks good?

any advice on what to check next would be appreciated.

I would pull the dishwasher and check the main pump/motor. THis is a 115 volt motor you can power up with a "cheater" cord. If you have a meter you can check for missing power at various places.

Slightly off topic - I'm having a problem (apparently) with the sump-pump gasket - our dishwasher has been leaking from underneath. I had a Kitchenaid/Whirlpool repair guy come out and stated he was 100% confident that the sump pump gasket was the culprit but it would be $300 in labor to repair and only a $20 part.

It sounds like the whole dishwasher needs to be unhooked (unfortunately the electrical was hard-wired into the dishwasher by the previous owner of our house), and the whole sump pump removed. Before I do this I wanted to check with the experts here on the viability of a novice do-it-yourselfer going at it. Here's the part I think I need: WHIRLPOOL Gasket, Pump sump

Input would be great.

The check valve is on the right side of the chopper, a black thing stuck in the housing.

How can I check to make sure the chopper is engaging the motor impeller? The chopper blade seems to turn quite easily. I am wondering if this is what is causing the reduced water pressure so that the top rack in not getting cleaned.

You have a busted chopper, just pull out and check.

I pulled the chopper assembly, compared to a new one and it does not appear to be broken in any way. It also does engage the impeller when it is in place. Should I be testing the motor next? If so, I am not sure how to do that. Can you help?

You might have a clog going to the upper spray arm. You also may have a low water level, just dump an extra gallon in to see if it works

Hi,

I followed this thread. I took out and cleaned chopper, still making a terrible noise when washing. Not sure what else might be the problem?
In fact the noise didn't change at all when cleaned chopper. I took botom cover off and it just sounds awful under the machine.
Thoughts?
