I have a Maytag range (Model MES5770AAW). The bottom element does not heat and yet everything else works fine including the broil element. I've checked the threads, but can't find a solution that quite fits my dilemma. Without going to a lot of expense is there a way I can accurately identify the source of this very frustrating problem? There are no obvious burn spots on the element and two independent continuity tests confirm that the element is fine. I've replaced the right and left terminals at the element and at the control board. I've tested the continuity of the wires with the new terminals and they check out okay plus they are both pushing 120v to the element which would lead me back to the element again as the source of the problem. And yet an appliance repair shop told me that an element either works or it doesn't and that if it passes a continuity test that is definitely not the problem. The only other anomaly besides the element not heating up is that the switch on the control board seems to be clicking back and forth more than what I would consider normal. Where do I go from here? If this is a control board issue as most solutions to the same problem seem to suggest, can I replace just the switch on the control board without spending $300 on a whole new board? Also can I safely test the control board/wiring by connecting the bake element wires to the broil element to see it it heats? Thanks for any advice

To do that, do I put a jumper from the right terminal to the left terminal? Also, if this turns out to be a control board issue, can just the switch be replaced on the board or do I need to replace the whole thing?

You have to remove the wires from the both Bake element terminals. Make sure the leads are not touching each other or any part of the oven body. Attach the meter probes to the wires and turn the control for Bake.
Be careful not to electrocute yourself!
If the reading is not about 240 VAC, replace the control board. If you need the correct part number for the control board, post the color of it.

Gene. Thanks, Gene, and I will be very careful.:D I have a white control board which Maytag/Whirlpool has evidently discontinued (go figure!). All they have available is black which would certainly match my all-white kitchen. Having worked with soldering computer terminals in the past, I can easily replace most things on a circuit board IF the part is available. But I can't seem to find the switch that I would need to replace on this site or others so I assume that means I would have to drop $300 into a whole new control board. Any suggestions? Thanks again for all of your help.:)

If you can find and replace the bake relay on the control board, hopefully it will fix it. If not, you can order the control board from Appliance Parts Pros for just $173.94 instead of $300 somewhere else. - The control board Part number: AP4396964
