I own a Kitchenaid oven- model KERC507HBS2.

The oven burners work, the control panel works, the oven turns on, clicks, and the degree area (for inside the oven) gos to LO and never heats up.

How can I diagnose the problem? Is it the heating element or a fuse?

The burners work on the oven- it is just the inside oven portion that is not heating up anymore. broil or bake- neither work.

What parts do I need and how do I change them?

According to the wiring diagram there is a 20 Amps fuse in the L2 circuit. It is not shown in the diagrams, so it's possible that this fuse is a part of the wire harness.

You probably can find it by removing the rear panel and tracing the red wire from the terminal block (#17 on the diagram) into the control panel.

I traced the red wire, but no fuse was found. The oven's heating element is still not heating up in broil or bake mode.

What else could it be?

It must be a fuse somewhere. Check the wiring diagram. It can be wrapped in a tape or hidden somehow.

Check for 120 VAC between the L2 terminal on the control board and ground. If there is correct voltage then the control board itself is bad.

I replaced the 20amp fuse with a slow-blow 20amp fuse (like the one that I pulled out) and the oven worked great for about 15 minutes. Then I saw smoke and unplugged the oven. I checked the fuse and found that it was starting to burn.

Any ideas? Is this unit worth repairing?

I'm not able to tell you if it's worth repair if we do not know what has to be done to fix it yet. The first step is the troubleshooting. There is definitely an electrical problem somewhere and has to be diagnosed.

I replaced the fuse with a slow blow 20 amp fuse. The oven worked for about 15 minutes and the fuse started burning (smoke). Should I have purchased a special kitchenaid recommended fuse (thermal, etc.)?

If so, what is the part info for the fuse.

The 20 amp fuse comes right after the lead from the wall plug and proceeds to the control panel/ oven elements...

I do not have any reasonable explanation so far. It has to be diagnosed, most likely by a pro.

First, thank you for your help. You are very much appreciated.

I called out an authorized Kitchenaid service tech and found that the previous owner of my oven had replaced the factory 20 amp fuse assembly with a homemade one instead. The homemade version was not able to handle the voltage correctly and subsequently began melting- thereby producing the electrical-buring smell. This could have caused an electrical fire had we not called out a professional to replace the fuse assembly with the in-line Kitchenaid part. Apparently, only authorized Kitchenaid technicians have access to this part and the repairman who did the previous repair did not have access to it- so he made his own. (BAD idea...)

Thank you for your help Gene. You have been great. Remember, if anyone else needs this part- get it from a Kitchenaid tech- they have them.
