My washer. with big loads. will not agitate. It'll agitate briefly on large and extra large loads then spin in one direction. The centrifugal force then causes the water to rise above tub level and spill to floor.

Can you give us a little more information.

Does it do ok when the water level switch is set for medium and low loads, or does this problem exist all the time? Is it tied to the water level switch at all, or just to how large the load in the machine is?

If it works ok at some levels it is probably the timer, if it does this all the time the problem may be the transmission.

Here is a service manual for your model.

Sounds like the brakes aren’t working. Put it is spin and let it get up to speed and open the lid. The spin basket should stop quickly as if it were braking. If not the brakes are bad. Repeat this a few times just to be sure it is not an intermitting problem. Hope this helps. Post what you find.

The water levels at each load size setting are appropiate. It agitates consistently on the remaining two settings, medium and mini. The brakes work.

Since it begins to agitate I don’t feel it is electrical because the motor is starting in the correct direction. It is going to be in the brakes or the transmission. I really think the brakes but it is hard to say. Try the test I described above again only this time put a large load of clothes in.

See the spin basket should be held by the brakes during wash. If the motor were turning in the wrong direction due to an electrical problem it wouldn’t start to agitate and it wouldn’t matter if the load was large or small.

I ran 4 large loads of clothes hoping to get more info. but it ran perfectly. the brakes also worked on spin. I also put the timer at different positions to start the washes and it worked fine. I guess I can only wait until it happens again or do you have any thoughts about what it might be.

If you are accurate on what you are saying it is doing I think the brake is the only thing it could be.

Unless you have had the transmission pulley off, there is a stop held on by a Phillips screw on the bottom of the pulley. If that stop isn’t far enough back the brakes may not be fully releasing. The problem with this is that stop will not just get out of place someone will have to move it.

It is also possible that the shaft is dirty or gummed up causing the pulley to stick and not fully release the brake. I have never seen this and it seems unlikely but possible.

Do you remember which way the tub was spinning when it was acting up during wash?

If not just wait until it acts up on you again and let us know.

It's happening again. It seems to to start when the timer works down to light load. When it clicks on light load to tub starts spinniing clockwise with no draining and will gather enough speed to throw the water over the top of the tub. The machine is noisier at this point with a muffled rattling type noise. I can lift the lid before it overflows to stop the momentum. When the timer gets to spin/rinse the tub will drain. The brakes still work on spin cycle.

The tub is spinning clockwise means that the motor is spinning in the correct direction. Which means that it is not an electrical problem so I still say that it is the brakes.

I was hoping trying the brakes in spin would prove the brakes were bad. But even still I think they are causing your problem.

It looks like it was the brakes. I tilted the machine back and put about 3 tablespoons of heavy gear oil into brake assembly. The washer makes no noise and has operated perfectly over many loads since last Thursday.
Thanks for all the help.
