The Whirlpool washer has a fabric softner dispenser attached at the top of the agitator. Is it necessary to remove the dispenser before pulling up the agitator? If so, how is the dispenser removed ? The dispenser will not turn. Don't know whether the dispenser is seized or does not separate from the top of the agitator. Thanks.

Hi Martha
The exploded view of your machine does not show a dispensor, but if you have one it should just lift out. There may be a lot of gunk which is making it difficult, but apply pressure and it should come off. Just be careful it does not release all at once and bop you in the face. (Been there, done that)
You will then find a plastic cap which will come out, and underneat that is a bolt which you can remove with a socket wrench and an extension. Should be 7/16" head.
The agitator will then left out, but again it may be hard to do from laundry gunk.
Click on your model number to see an exploded view of the agitator.
Good luck.

MY washer model LA5600XT is not in your database. I have only used the dispenser once, then attempted to remove it to rinse it out. But was unable to remove it. Most likely it was stuck when it was delivered.
Thanks Martha

I found the full model number on the plate attached to the washer LA5600XTW0. I was using the number from the user manual which was not complete. I removed the softener dispenser. Up near the top of the dispenser is a slight rim. I used a putty knife to lift up on the dispenser at the rim and it came out. It has small plastic protrusions that secure it in the opening.
It is 6 1/2 inches in length. Wide at the top and tapered at the bottom. Someone with a firm grip can probably just pull up on it to remove it. Also it's kind of wide at the top for the average female hand.
Thank you much.
Martha
