I have a Maytag Atlantis washing machine, top loader. The machine is agitating but will not spin on any cycle. Had a repair man come but was very unsure of the problem. Feels that the shaft has slipped down and needs a washer to release the brake. But still very unsure of himself. Has anyone come across this.

Does it drain? Does the motor run when it should spin?

When you open the washer, the clothes are still soaking went and you have to wring them out. You don't see the water sitting in the drum.
the motor does run when it spins. There is no grinding or squealing.

You have to be near the washer next time you use it and watch how it spins. Would it shake? How fast it will go?
It's very hard to remotely diagnose it and you are our eyes, ears and hands.
