Hello! I have a Whirlpool LTE5243DQ thin twin stackable washer/dryer. The washer is making a very loud rubbing or grating sound during agitation. The sound is not present during spin. Any ideas for replacement parts I could try to fix the problem? Many thanks.

You might have busted agitator paws in the upper section of the agitator. Just verify by turning the upper section. If bad, remove the 7/16 nut and pull out the agitator. Stand on the lower section of the agitator and yank off the top section.

Thanks for the reply. I don't get any noise from manually moving the agitator and the paws that engage the removable portion seem to be in good shape. The sound is like a sawing that goes with the action of the agitator. What should I do next to troubleshoot?

Pull out the agitator and check it, might have something stuck in there.

Rich thanks for the continued advice. I pulled the agitator completely and ran the agitation cycle of the wash. The sound is still present. It sounds like a power drill on/off coming from inside the cabinet. I don't know how to get in there to look (and listen) around. Any advice?

Remove the screws from the panel above the washer door and remove each riply spring clip. Lower washer outer panel will slide right out. Washer should agitate without the lid switch.

Rich, thanks for all your help. I would not have made it this far without it. It looks like I have a broken spring in the rear left hand corner which tilts the tub and causes the motor to come in contact with the washer base, and thus noise!

So, I see the springs for sale on the website. Do I need to pull the tub to do the replacement or can I swap out the springs in place? If I need to pull the tub, is the only tool I need the spanner wrench?

Thanks!

Looks like there is a screw under the bottom frame to take out, then brace the bottom of the transmission with wood to pull the spring out.
Let us know how you make out with this.
