GE Profile freezer too cold, fridge too warm

Gene - it appears as if there is NO airflow into the frig. The freezer is now at 15 degrees. This happens periodically as well.

thanks for any info you might have on the cause.

Rebecca

Rebecca,

You have to have an ohmmeter and the refrigerator thermometer to perform the next step of the troubleshooting. Let me know when you will be ready.

Gene.

i have a thermometer, but, need to check on borrowing the ohmeter. Can i start with one?
Rebecca

now i have both the Ohmeter and the thermometer.
thanks,
rebecca

Place the thermometer in the fresh food compartment.

Unplug the refrigerator. Pull it out of the wall and remove the cover from the main control board. Remove the J1 plug from the control board. Set the ohmmeter on a highest scale. Measure the resistance between the wires connected to the J1-5 & J1-1 and the J1-5 and J1-2.

Post the results and the temperature in the fresh food compartment at that time.

Gene.

are the j1 & j2 plugs clearly marked. i am now getting in a little over my head!
Thanks

We are talking about J1 plug only. The numbers after dash are numbers of the terminals/wires connected to that plug.

It should be marked.

Gene.

J1 - 5 008, J1-1 000, j1 - 5 008 and j1 - 2 009, term 58 degrees.

sounds greek to me! what does this tell you?

thanks,
Rebecca

I’m afraid I did not get it clear. Can you describe step by step how did you do it please?

Gene.

we unplugged the frig, pulled off the j1 piece from the circuit board, then put the positive probe on the first metal spike and the negative on the 5th metal spike(for lack of a better term)and got a reading. Then, did the same with spike one and two.

does that make sense?
thanks,
Rebecca

ok, by metal spike, i meant terminal/wires.
thanks!

i have watched a video on how to use the Ohmeter. i did what you requested and it reads 0 for both reading. freezer today started at 6 degrees, frig at 50, now freezer at 4 and frig at 58!

any idea? thanks,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

Before we will proceed further I would like to make sure everything was done right.

There are 9 terminals total in the J1 plug. One of the meter probes should be connected to the terminal 5 which is actually right in the middle. The second meter probe should be connected to the terminal #1 where the blue/red wire is connected to. The terminal #2 is not used in your refrigerator and there is no an ywire should be connected to this terminal.

The meter should be set on the highest possible scale for these tests.

If you are going to redo it then you have to measure the temperature in the fresh food compartment again.

Gene.

Gene - i know i have the correct plug, i see the 9 terminals and i see #5 has 2 wires going into it. but, the first terminal does not have anything in it and #2 does. is there anyway i can attach a picture to show you?

thanks for your patience!
Rebecca

Gene - i noticed that my entire mother board is upside down. so, the j1 is under the plug and so i plugged into #5 and #1 and got a reading. J1 008 and J2 0. the term is 50.

thanks,
Rebecca

This AM, frig temp 42, freezer -2. the air flow in the freezer seems strong, but, the frig weak in comparison. could the thermistat in the frig be off?

thanks for any input you might have!
Rebecca

Gene - i tried a test this AM that i saw on you tube. i put the frig thermistor in a cup of ice water to determine if it was working. the temp on the digital display read 27, but, the free standing thermometer read 42. So, can i assume from this that the thermistor is working? the fan is not coming on and i imagine it won’t until the temp gets higher.

thoughts?
thanks so much!
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

Replace the thermistor in the fresh food compartment.

Gene - do you all sell the end cap that holds the wire connection? What makes you think this needs to be replaced?

thanks -
Rebecca

I"m not sure which part did you mean. You can review the parts list by clicking on the link I posted for you on the first page.

This recommendation based on the test results you posted.
