Disassembly of cover

How do I disassemble the cover on my Whirlpool Duet dryer to check the blower wheel?

I think I have the same problem.

The newer Dryers don’t have the same screw locations and disassembly as the older ones.

I can’t find anything out on the Internet and I’m an Internet guy.

I have a GE Profile Dryer. One of the colorful ones. DPVH880EJMG and I don’t have screws on the control panel.. screws on the top of the door entrance or a spring clip with a putty knife thing that I can tell.

It seems like the control panel might slide up but I’m a big guy and don’t want to break it.

I was at Costco and they had a Whirlpool Dryer there that had a similar design and I couldn’t tell how to open that either.

I called the GE Service Line.. the guy said to look it up on the Internet… he didn’t have more info. A local repair guy didn’t know on the phone?

It’s got to be something easy…

HOW DO YOU OPEN A NEW DRYER?

What is wrong with the dryer?

Gene.

We both need to open the cabinet up. How do you get the top and sides off?

I don’t see anything on the Internet?

Thank you.

askmelater,

The control panel is held in place with one screw behind the control knob and four key slots inside the control panel that engage four grommets (2 on each side) attached to the shield.

Remove the rotary knob by pulling straight out.
Remove the Phillips-head screw located inside the control knob recess.
Raise the control panel vertically to disengage the four key slots from the four grommets.

Gene.

Thank you! I guess that is the new standard of design.

From what I’ve read.. if the belt is there and looks OK it’s usually the motor that is causing the problems.

The dryer will just hum unless I open the door, hold the switch and give it a boost. I tried it empty and it wouldn’t move unless I helped it.

Thanks again!

Bryan.

Hi Bryan,

Most likely the problem is a bad motor. Let me know if you will need the removal instructions.

Yes please. I’d like the removal instructions. I’m going to order the part tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay.

The instructions are attached.

Got the front cover off, checked everything out. The heating elements work, the blower wheel spins, the drum turns, no funny noises. Assuming the exhaust vent is clear (I’ll check it tonight after work) what would cause it to take almost 2 hours to dry a load of laundry?

Most likely there is a restricted air flow. Disconnect the vent hose on the back of the dryer and run a load as you usually do.

Gene.

Gene, I replace the motor and I still have the same symptoms.

It won’t spin on it’s own, but will spin if you hold down the door switch and give it a hand. Could it be the belt?

Is there anything electronic that would determine the power going to the motor? I don’t hear anything unusual. I might hear a click when it starts the blower. No heat until I manually help it along.

I can order a new belt for $25 with shipping. Should I remove the top and see if the belt is moving at all first.

Could it be a spring in the two white pulley’s or tension?

What do you think?

Gene, it could be the capacity couldn’t it.

If it might be.. I’m thinking about replacing the Belt, Spring on the Pulleys and the Capacity… #632 on diagram.

Hi Bryan,

How freely the drum moves when you turn it manually?

If you can feel any restrictions then check how the belt was installed and the conditions of the idler pulley.

If it moves freely, measure the current drawn by the drive motor while it’s trying to start. It suppose to be no more than 3 amps. If it’s more than that with the new motor, very likely the power board causing the problem.

Post the results.

Gene.

The drum doesn’t spin freely. I think the belt is alright.

I just ordered a new Belt, Spring and Capacitor. It’s $58 delivered. Not bad.

I’m going to take it apart one more time and replace those items. I’m thinking it’s the capacitor or spring. I don’t recall seeing a spring on the two pulley’s so I’ll take a closer look.

If that doesn’t work.. I’ll call someone. It should be easy to take apart and put together this time. I’ll let you know.

It’s a $1000 dryer so new Motor, Belt and parts is worth it. I have old motor as backup. It’s also champagne colored so matching will be difficult :-))

GENE!

I still haven’t fixed my Dryer. Good thing I have another one in the guest house.

I replaced the motor, capacitor and belt. Belt just because.

It won’t run unless I manually help it at first.

I took out the drum and ran it without anything. The motor doesn’t turn unless I use a stick and just gently push the blade to help it. Then it turns.

You mentioned the Board. Could anything else cause this? The heater comes on and everything works once it gets a little help.

???

I would like you to measure the current drawn by the motor and post the result.
