MEW6630DDS Maytag double convection wall oven goes nuclear and shoots up over 500 degrees. It is an intermittent problem with only the top oven, and when it happens the display goes blank with only a “bake” light flashing, then the broiler element goes on full blast. Seems to me to be a dangerous fire hazard as the food in the oven is scorched to the point of ignition. I never cook on this unit without staying in the kitchen through the entire process. I am sure that Maytag is aware of the problem since I do not believe that any manufacturing operation creates a defective product only once…there are probably hundreds of defective units with the same issue. I have not contacted them(Maytag)…but I plan to voice my concerns very soon. Would like to hear more from anyone who has or has had the same issue with this double wall oven. my model is MEW6630dds. Thanks and I will hope to hear more soon!

I wish there was a class action suit or recall against Maytag for this product defect which is clearly a hazard to users. I keep checking back hoping to read something is moving forward in that fashion.
As noted originally, mine failed about two months past warranty end, and Maytag’s best offer was a $200 discount on the part with me paying over $600 of labor. When they couldn’t tell me the replacement part would be any better/safer than OEM, I refused. Why would I put myself and my family in that situation ?
I was especially frustrated because I had bought a new home and bought Maytag goods and four of five major appliances failed in less than three years.
Why would I spend $600 on an item just as likely to fail again in the near future ? And the failure is not obvious. It can appear to work normally, you leave the room, come back and the unit is obviously overheating.
And lastly, the main reason the item is a hazard is because the fail safe should not be an overheat condition. A system fail safe should be shut down the unit.
One of my new year’s resolutions is to petition the CPSC to take action against Maytag…unless a better option develops. Good luck with your discussions with Maytag. Mine failed to bring a positive solution.
