Plastic burned on Deflector heat plate in dryer

I accidently dried two outdoor plant freeze protector blanket covers on low heat today after washing them on the delicate cold cycle. Unfortanley some parts of the paper like cover burned onto the back deflector heat plate (part 504) and I am unable to get all the burned white plastic areas off. I had no clue the cover was embedded with plastic! I should have used the fluff- no heat selection!!! My husband unscrewed two of the three external allen screws found in the middle of the deflector heat plate, hoping we can clean it. As he unscrewed the second screw, he felt the drum shift down some. He screwed back the screws with an allen wrench, but now one screw does not fit in. We have two of three screws in place. We see you have part 504- Deflector heat # AP2043378 available for a little over $7.00. How do we replace this without the bearing kit behind it getting affected or the drum shifting? Please help us. We do not want to use the dryer with one missing screw and have the plastic reminants burn the dryer or the clothes. Thank you! Jan and Tony

My husband looked at the deflector plate again this morning, and as he was unscrewing the two screw he started with, he actually found both not screwed right into the bearing behind the defelctor. There is only ONE screw untouched that is in place onto the bearing. We hope we can get a repsonse soon from the volunteer appliance folks! Thank you! Jan and Tony

Thank You, Gene! So...............per UR referred post....... Open the door and remove the screws holding the top panel from the door frame.
Lift the top panel and remove the screw on each side holding the front panel.
Remove the front panel.
Remove the access panel on the back to get access to the belt and idler pulley.
Draw a picture of the belt rolling over the idler and motor pulleys before removing the belt.
Remove the belt. Remove the drum.
(The part number for the rear bearing kit is AP2619300) - N/A 4 us
(The part number for the front bearing is AP3790641) - N/A 4 us
(The part number for the slide (4 used) is AP631382) - N/A 4 us So we have 2 remove the belt 2 remove the drum? Do we have 2 remove the rear and front bearings in order to put in a new deflector heat plate AP2043378? So we can order the deflector heat plate # AP2043378 for our model? Or do you know if WD-40 or something else will remove the dried on plastic once we get the deflector heat plate off? God Bless You! Jan and Tony

Jan and Tony,
Sorry for the delay.
You do have to remove the belt in order to remove the drum, but you do not have to remove the bearings.
Yes, you can order this part from Appliance Parts Pros.
The part is so inexpensive, it's better to avoid cleaning (and all headaches) and just replace it.
Gene.

Thank You sooooooooooo much, Gene! We have a gas dryer. So we hope there is a shut off valve in the back of the dryer. We called our gas company and they told us there was, and all we have to do is turn the valve off. They said they do not need to come to turn the gas off. Is there is gas hose we need to disconnect? Our laundry room in which our dryer is in is small. Just enough room to pull it straight out. Might be hard to get behind the dryer? How much space do we need to remove the drum? Is this job something we can remove the whole dryer with a dolly and place in the garage to work in or just pull the dryer out and there will be room to work in back and take out the drum? We will order the part today! We called a few appliance repair places and they do not work on gas dryers. GE will charge us a big fee just to come out and diagnose the problem! We know the problem! Thank you for getting back to us! We appreciate you so very much! Jan and Tony

Jan and Tony,
There suppose to be a flexible gas connector behind the dryer which can be unscrewed after the gas turned off. It's better to move the dryer into the garage to have a sufficient room for repair.

We finally had a chance 2 get around 2 fixing the dryer mid April.
We had 2 go about it differently then instructed in some ways.
We hope this will help someone else out if they run into the same problem.
We removed the top and front panel as instructed, but could not remove the back panel.
Our model did not have an access panel!
The ground strap assembly and retainer bearing holding the diffuser gas and plate ASM was bolted from within attached to the back panel.
We ended up removing the whole back-splash assembly, supporting all the wires and panel, thinking we could remove the back panel or at least get to the bolts from within. It did not help.
We ended up tilting the whole dryer on it's back, supporting all the wires attached to the inner door panel and the panel itself and supporting the back-splash assembly with all its wires
We then removed the screws holding the deflector plate and replaced the deflector plate (which we ordered from Appliance Parts Pro for about $13.00 w shipping)
It took the two of us to hold the drum in place to align the deflector heat plate to the bearing kit behind it. It was very hard to hold the drum when the dryer was upright, that was why we tilted the dryer on it's back, to help prevent the drum assembly from falling.
Quite a job!
We initially called appliance repair places and were shocked to find how many did NOT work with gas dryers!
We are grateful for all the help we received here from Gene (and all the diagrams available here on our model) as well as the guidance God gave us when we could not in any way remove the back panel as instructed to get to the drum, etc.
It was very hard to remove the nut holding the gas pipe leading to the gas shut off valve!
But with much prayer, all worked out!
Praise God the dryer works now after all that was taken apart from us amateurs!
Tony and Jan
