I started the dryer last night and went to bed. This morning the timer knob was half way through the cycle and the clothes were wet. I removed the back and found the red 14 gauge wire was burnt through at the ternimal with the incoming power cord. What could have caused this and what testing should I do?

Most likely it happened due to loose connection. Replace the power cord and the terminal block (if it's damaged).
