My daughter has a1990 whirlpool fridge side by side.when you plug it in the fan underneath near the compressor turns on but the compressor just clicks. I checked inside the freezeer and the fan in there is not working either and it didnt get cold. is it the fan inside the freezer that needs to be replace or is the compressor junk too ?

Very likely the problem is a bad compressor start relay and/or overload, but there is a small chance for the compressor itself to bad as well. The only way to determine exactly what is wrong is to replace the start relay first. Whirlpool redesigned this part and it looks very different. It comes with the complete installation instructions. - The overload assembly Part number: AP3120279

Even if it's the compressor, it can be worth to fix it.
The fist question is how large and how good is condition of the old refrigerator?
Check out prices for a new refrigerator and prices for a new compressor installed and warranty after repair.
