The heating element on my dryer does not seem to be working. I checked the element for continuity and it seems fine. There are two thermostats on the heating unit that show a closed curcuit (resistance shows positive) when I check them. Can you guys tell me if that is normal? Is there a way to check the thermostats that you guys know of with a multimeter for functionality? What about a test that I can test the input voltage to the heating unit? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Not sure what you mean. I think it is just different terminology. To me a positive resistance means there is resistance. All thermostat's and thermal fuses should be 0 ohms at room temperature. Note that the cycling thermostat has an internal heater so you have to be sure that you are measuring it's contacts and not the internal heater.

Make sure the unit is unplugged. Also unplug at least one side of any device you are measuring, this ensures that you do not read an alternate/parallel circuit path. Not sure what you mean by functionality as you have no heat you really do not care if the thermostat opens just that it is closed.

Try flipping the breaker off/on slowly a couple times, sometimes you can loose half the line without actually tripping the breaker.
If this does nothing, check the voltage at the plug
L1 to L2 should be 240 volts
L1 to Neutral and L2 to Neutral, both should be 120 volts.
If OK
Unplug the unit and check the wires at the terminal strip in the machine to make sure none are loose or burned out
If OK
Check the power at the terminal strip.
Be careful as 240 volts is lethal !!!

Thanks much for the comprehensive reply to my post. All of the information is and was very useful. After further inspection of the 240 receptacle, I discovered that only half of it was hot. I then went to the breaker box and measured output voltage for both lines. The breaker, even though it was not tripped, was only hot on one of the lines. I will be replacing the breaker today. Thanks again.
