3 days ago the refrigerator and freezer just stopped cooling, ice and frozen items began melting. Can't really afford a new one at this time. Is there anything that can be done?

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for frs26zth models | AppliancePartsPros.com

Your model number seems to be short a couple digits so the following is for a FRS26ZTHW0 and may not be a match to your unit.

You have to do more troubleshooting:
What is running and what is not?
Is the compressor clicking?
Are the evaporator coils iced up?
etc?

Here are a couple good sites with help on fridge repair.

Thank you for the reply. Yesterday after it had been unplugged overnight I plugged it back in. The icemaker made ice. The refrigerator part seemed to get cool and was icing a little on the bottom. This morning however, the refrigerator part is warm and the ice maker has not made ice. It's dripping water. There's motor for something running but I don't know if it's the compressor (I would have thought it was).

You have to find out what is actually running.
The unit has a compressor, a condenser/compressor fan and an evaporator fan all of which can be something is running.

If the compressor is not running and the freezer is not warm, could be the thermostat (Item 21 in Section 5) is shot.
If this is a two wire thermostat, you could unplug the unit, short the wires to the thermostat together, tape them up so they cannot short to anything, plug it in and give it a try. If the unit fires up and gets cold then the thermostat is probably the cause.

Check that the damper is opening to let cold air into the fresh food area, Item 115 in Section 5.

If the compressor and the fans are off, you could be stuck in a defrost cycle.
