I have a whirlpool duet washer that turns on and then the control panel goes blank. I then unplug it for a while and sometimes it will com back on and it will work for that wash cycle. Other times it goes dead the door says locked and I have to unlock it by hand. I was told it is the (ccu) that is causing the problem. Can you tell me if this is true before I put more money into and expensive washer.

It is somewhat difficult to diagnose a problem with the CCU if the CCU itself is bad because the company has programmed diagnostics and error codes into the CCU, but if the CCU is defective, well, you get the picture.
There should be tech notes under the front cover which will show you how to put the machine in diagnostic mode.
See if you can do that and get better clarity on your problem. At the end of the day you may just have to replace the board on spec. Welcome to the world of appliance microprocessor controls.
