unit will suddenly start up in defrost mode. seems like it does this after being operated on a longer heating cycle before this happens as opposed to a 30 second reheat. want to fix instead of leave door open or water in it all the time

I'm guessing its a touch panel problem. Without proof that's all it is. A guess.

The touch panels are expensive.

You might try reseating the connectors first.
