We recently bought a house and it came with a dryer. When we tried to use it, it shut off right when I released the on button. If I hold the button the dryer works and heat goes on after a while, but as soon as I release the button it stops. The dryer is a hotpoint gtdx100gm1ww

The centrifugal switch on your motor is not working. It might not be switching on due to a little arm that triggers the switch. Or there may be a clog or lint preventing it from switching on.
It may be the contacts inside the switch are burnt / corroded.
It is possible to check for the reason.
Watch Bill show you the idea in this video.
