My Whirlpool washer just started a loud knocking noise during the agitation/washing cycle. All other cycles operate normally and with no loud knocking noises. Are there any ideas as to what I can look at to stop this noise? The washer is perfectly level and I just replaced the agitator dogs thinking that this might solve the issue, but it didn't.

I have the transmission part on order and have a follow up question. I can remove the top part of the agitator no problem, but the bottom part stays in the machine. Do I need to remove the bottom part of the agitator to install the new transmission? If so, how do I remove the bottom part of the agitator?

Yes, it must be removed. So, you took the agitator bolt out and the top half came off? The bottom part just fits over the splines on the agitator shaft. You should be able to pull it off. May be a little stuck.

Yes, the top half comes off when the bolt is removed. I'll put a little extra effort in pulling the bottom part up out of the machine. Thanks!!
