After an imbalance while we were away, we found machine with clothes tangled around agitator. Once untangled and removed, subsequent loads do not agitate properly, however, the spin cycle works fine leading to clothes not being cleaned properly. Tried replacing dogs but still not agitating once clothes are added to drum, and barely so when only water.....what is next step.

I am thinking the problem is the transmission. You can take off the cabinet, the pump and motor and see if you can turn the transmission with the coupling in a counterclockwise direction. If you can and the agitator does not move it is likely the transmission.
