Upright Frigidaire freezer not cooling right!

We need help. We have a upright Frigidaire that is not freezing right. Top shelf is not freezing and some food in door. There is plenty of air flow. The coils are icing over...within a few hours of defrosting. We replaced the defrost thermostat and the defrost heater and the coils are still freezing over. The bottom 3/4 of the food in the unit is frozen solid. The seal on the door seems fine. For some odd reason we can't find the defrost timer? Does this model not have one? Where in the world is it? Its not near the compressor. Thank you for your help.:)

I am assuming that the @ is just a typo and it should have been a 2.

From this I am assuming that the evaporator/freezer fan is on whenever the compressor is on.

Does the compressor run all the time except when the unit goes through a defrost cycle?

If it is cycling on/off then the problem is probably not the defrost system.

It is normal for coils to have frost on them, it all depends on the amount. For defrost to be a problem the coils have to be frosted/iced over to the point that the evaporator fan cannot pull air through them.

Defrost is controlled by the control board (item 151 in section 03).

Does the unit work OK for a couple days after you do a manual defrost?
Usually it takes a couple days for the frost to build up on the evaporator coils for it to effect the cooling.

What is the frost patern on the evaporator coils?
It should be fairly even.
If it is just in one area usually where the freon enters the coils then you may have a sealed system problem.

Thank you for your reply. Yes you are correct about the model #.

The fan seems to be running all the time. Every time I open the door its running. and the compressor also seems to be running all the time.

I don't know how to tell when the freezer goes into defrost mode. It's a frost free freezer. I haven't notice when or if it does that. All I know is that the coils all always iced over so the defrost heater never comes on.

The coils are covered in ice with 24 hours of manual thawing (hair blower). The frost is very think and there is so way air can come though. It's a solid wall of ice. The is a little spot that keeps clear of ice just under the fan.

Like I mentioned we have bought a new defrost heater and thermostat per all the troubleshooting we have found on line...but still can't get the coils to stay somewhat clear.

The unit doesn't have time to freeze the food cause the ice builds up very fast.

So do you think we should try to order a new control board?

Yes that is what I would do.

If you get it from AppliancePartsPros they will let you return it if it does not fix your problem.

You could unplug the unit and check from pins 4 to 8 at the control board.
Should be around 30 to 100 ohms re: the defrost heater.
Note that the unit must be frozen up when you do this re: thye defrost thermostat must be frozen.
If you have the correct resistance then all that is left in the defrost circuit is the board.

FYI: the unit should defrost every 12 hours of compressor run time.
It should last for half an hour.
The compressor and evaporator fan will shut off during a defrost cycle.

BIG Thank you denman!!!
Got the new control panel and put it in and the heater started defrosting very fast , so Yay...and I realized a few days later, you need to put the panel back I guess in order for all to freeze again. The freezer is back to normal, so a big thank you for taking the time to help and reply my question.

Hi denman. I ran accross this thread and believe I have the same/similar issue. The freezer works fine for several weeks, then BAM, it starts to sound the high temp alarm and food starts to thaw/not freeze. I started noticing it if the door was open for longer than a minute or two (such as when we were putting meat/bread away after grocery shopping). Now it just seems to do it at random times. It seems to work fine if I empty it and defrost it (and it drains quite a bit of water when I do that). Im wondering if the circuit board you mentioned in this post might be the culprit? Thanks in advance.
