I have a Whirlpool refrigerator model #ED5VHEXVQ04. It works and cools very well but will randomly shut completely off and not run causing the food to defrost and the ice to melt. If I play with the temp controls or give the fridge a smack, it will cut back on and work fine. It usually does this at least once a day. I replaced the defrost thermostat and it's still doing it. Any ideas on what else could be the problem?

Sounds like a main control thermostat problem.
Instead if smacking it turn the temperature dial up/down.
if it fires up then replace the thermostat.

Do not turn it to off as this would reset the adaptive defrost board and you do not want this as it could also be the cause of your problem.

Adjusting the temp controls will make it come back on. I'll check out the main control thermostat. Thanks.

I've replaced the cold control and now have another issue. It runs fine, but seems like it is running more than it used to and is colder. The drinks in the refrigerator have ice in them and the freezer seems colder than it was even with both controls on the lowest setting. It does cycle on and off occasionally, it just runs more now it seems.

Could this be a bad defrost control board or is there any other explanation? Thanks for any help.

Does not sound like a defrost problem.

Check your freezer temperature, should be between 0 and 5 degrees F.

I've checked the temps and the freezer is running between -10 and 8 degrees. The fridge is running between 21 to 30 degrees. This is with the temp controls on the lowest setting.

If by lowest setting you mean the coldest setting then move the control to warmer.

Also when you replaced it are you sure you put it back into th plastic tubing and that the end of the capillary tube was in the same position as the original thermostat.
It is the end of the capillary tube that does the actual temperature sensing.

Sorry, I meant it's on the warmest setting.

Yes the plastic tubing is on and is in the same position. I lined up the end of the plastic tubing with the end of the capillary tube. Maybe I should slide the plastic back and expose the end of the capillary tube some? Thanks for your help.

This may be worth a try.

Could just be that the thermostat you received is defective or perhaps not the correct one.

Think I have it figured out. Did some more reading and saw that there is a small calibration screw on the cold control. After 2 or 3 turns counter clockwise, it seems to be staying at the correct temperature. Thanks for your help.
