I received the new selector switch and installed it today. Installation was quite easy and took me only about 15 minutes from start to finish (including a little time to figure out how to detach the old switch).
I also disassembled the old switch and noticed that several of the copper contacts were black from years of use. I suppose that could be a potential source the problem.
Because this is an intermittent problem, only time will tell if the selector switch was really the culprit. Thanks for your help.

Less than a year after replacing the selector switch, the problem has returned. The dishwasher hangs during wash and again during rinse - with both Regular mode and Scrub mode. Not intermittent - hangs every time.
This time around there is an additional problem - the heated drying cycle never engages at the end. The dial advances, but the heating element never turns on.
Because the select switch was replaced so recently (May 2011), I doubt that is the culprit again. Should I be looking at the thermostat or the heating element? If they are not expensive parts, I will just replace both.
Model is Bosch SHU3012UC/U06

The parts diagram actually shows two thermostats ...
Part Number AP2804281 is Tstat near the control panel and costs $44.18
Part Number AP2804285 is Tstat near the heater and costs $17.38
The heater assembly is Part Number AP2804286 and costs $172.50
That's $234 if I replace all three - ouch!

You have to check for continuity two parts: the heating element and the high limit thermostat (on top of the heating element).
Gene.
