cooktop light stays on when controls are turned off. What could be the problem?

The light that stays on, is it one that is lit only when a surface is turned on or one that means a burner is hot?

when the surface is turned on not the hot surface light

Okay, so one of the switches has a welded pilot contact. Do you have a meter to test with?
