The other day I did a load of laundry (electric dryer) and the drum stopped turning when the time was done, but the heater stayed on. It started to smell like something was burning and the dryer was really hot when I finally figured out that it was the dryer that smelled. Today I figured out that if the timer is anywhere but in the off position, the heating coil comes on, even if you don't push "start". Is this a timer problem or something worse?

You have a shorted centrifical switch on the motor. You best get a new switch if they sell them. Just crunch in your model number and check.

Most likely the cause of the problem is the heating element shorted to the ground.

Remove the rear panel, remove the wires from the heating element terminals and check for continuity across each of the terminals and the ground.

If the readings are other than "∞", replace the heating element.

- The part number for the heating element is AP3094254

Gene Is Right ...the Heating Element Is Shorted To Ground When You Take The Heating Box Off,check Inside To See If The Heater Coil Is Touching The Metal Housing Inside The Box..if So There Your Trouble..

I Forgot To Mention That If It,s Shorted, Check Your Exhaust Vent.most Times This Is Caused From ,to Long Of A Vent Or A Pluged Vent.what Happens Is That There Is To Much Heat In The Housing Causing The Element Coil To Sag And Short To Ground..
