our microwave keeps running after the timer has completed and the only way to stop it is to open the door. if I close the door immediately it will sometimes start up again. It seems if I leave the door open for several minutes, the microwave will remain off after the door is closed.

Sounds like you have a bad door interlock switch. I would give them a visual check first then do a continuity check on them.
