loud noise during agitation only, belt and pulleys move fine both ways

I have the loud noise during agitation only, spin works fine, but haven't seen an answer to what happens if the belt moves fine when pulling it manually. The belt and pulleys work fine, turns easily both ways when I do it by hand without any pull and without any noise. Since the belt moves easily both ways by hand, should I spend time looking at the thrust bearing assembly? Does this mean it definitely is the transmission?

A problem with the thrust bearing would show itself in the spin cycle.
It does sound like you have a transmission problem, since it works ok in the spin cycle. It is also possible the brakes are an issue. You would know this if the tub is spinning during agitation.

OK, the tub doesn't spin during agitation, just the agitator does. The agitator does move fine, just makes a terrible noise. I've seen others call it a grinding noise, that's what I would call it too. So the transmission is what makes the noise? I'm trying to rule everything else out!

Could be the ratcheting mechanism in the agitator. Run it with the agitator removed.

Run it with the front panel removed so you can try to isolate the source of the noise.
