the coupling leaks but sometimes does work. Is there anyway to repair this?
And if I need a new coupler and hose ass., exactly how do I access the assembly? Do I take off the top board?

Here are your parts
Parts for Maytag MDC4650AWW Dishwasher - AppliancePartsPros.com

The coupler/hose is item 15 in section 01. Click on it's picture for more info on it.

Also check out the faucet adapter (item 10) to be sure it is the same as yours.

There are not any internal parts available for the coupler. You have to replace the entire assembly.

Coupler/Hose Removal
1. Disconnect power to the machine.
2. Remove Wood Top, see "Wood Top" removal
procedure.
3. Remove Foil Bottom, see "Foil Bottom" removal
procedure.
4. Disconnect power cord from the terminal box. I am not sure that this is absolutely necessary.
Disconnect the fill hose from the water valve and the
drain hose from the drain pump.
5. Remove the wire tie securing the drain and fill hoses
to a rib on the tub.

Wood Top Removal
1. Disconnect power to the machine.
2. Remove the 2 screws securing the top to the
mounting flanges positioned under the top in front.
3. Carefully slide top forward to disengage spacer
washers from slots in the rear of the cabinet flanges.

Foil Bottom Removal
Partial removal of Foil Bottom will allow access.
1. Disconnect power to the machine.
2. Lay down a protective pad. Carefully tilt the unit on its
back, onto the protective pad. Remove 2 fasteners on the sides.
3. Partially remove the Foil Bottom by folding down.
