I noticed the smell of burning electronics this morning about 20 min into the wash cycle. About 10 minutes later I heard a 'shorting' sound. After unplugging the unit, I took off the front access panel but did not note any water leakage or apparent melting. I plugged the unit back in and then restarted the cycle. It ran well for about 10 min and then flipped the breaker. I unplugged the unit again and opened the cover to its j-box and found that the neutral had melted through the wire nut and eventually grounded out on the jbox. The washer is wired to an appliance cord and plugged into a dedicated, grounded outlet on a separate circuit. Mainly, I want to know if there is any reason why I shouldn't cut out the damaged wiring and reconnect. Think this is a case of a loose connection or something wrong with the unit itself? Hi.
Just cut off the bad part of the wire and reconnect with new wire nut. Make sure both wire nuts are tight.
Simon.

Thanks, Simon. That is what I had hoped for. So far so good.
