My GE upright has ice and frost buildup at the bottom-back of the freezer where it used to blow cold air. Doesn't feel like any air is blowing. I unplugged it to allow it to completely defrost and have the same problem. I did the dollar test and it didn't come out easily at all, suction seems to still be pretty good. It seems to be a motor going, but I'm not sure what it is. The food has almost completely thawed and I don't know what to do. I hope this is something that I can repair myself, as I am very handy. If not, I'm wondering if I should just buy a new one. Thanks guys.

If the unit has auto defrost then that may be your original problem. Remove the evaporator coil cover so you can see the coils. Are they getting cold? Is there a frost pattern that is fairly even over the entire coil? If there is an evaporator fan, is it running? Is the compressor running? I would not buy a new unit until I was confident that I knew what was wrong with the old one. Here is a good site with repair info http://www.applianceaid.com/repair-help.htmlNote that much of the info on refidgerators will also apply to you if your unit has auto defrost. |
