The washer will not start the spin cycle on occasion. If it's a light load it might start the cycle on its own. The majority of the time I need to start the drum in the direction of rotation to get it started. It is becoming more difficult to get started. I do not see any belts underneath that I could replace. Does this sound like a transmission problem, and if so, will the repair exceed the cost of replacement?

Possibly a transmission oil leak causing the clutches to slip and therefore a slow or no spin would occur. You would have to remove the wrapper to get a good visual of whats happening. A leaky tranny will also give you a spray of oil on the inside walls of the wrapper. The repair will probably exceed half the cost of a new washer if this is your cause.

I've pulled the motor and tranny out. I took it to a repair shop. The technician said he'd "love to sell me a new transmission" but that there was nothing wrong with mine. Motor couple is good. There is no "spray" of oil anywhere, two drops on the floor. No sign of oil in the clutch housings or on the linings. Any other thoughts? BTW this is a Whirpool washer, Model #LSQ9564JQ1.

If drive block ok, I would check for a worn clutch and dragging brake shoes. If it is hard to turn the spin basket by turning the tranny coupler clockwise, you have bad brake shoes. If so, look at my brake shoe replacement article in the general comments section.
