Suddenly the fridge & freezer are not cool enough. The meat still seams to be frozen, but the icecream is mushy. The milk is semi cold.

We also have had problem the last 6 months with very loud noises coming from the fan in the freezer that stops when you open the door

Is the fan in the freezer still running?
Are the condenser coils on the bottom of the refrigerator clean?

The condenser coils are located at the back of the refrigerator towards the floor. Once you pull the refrigerator out you will see the access panel. Unplug the refrigerator and remove the access panels. You will see the compressor, fan and coils. The coils collect dust over time and plug up. Then the refrigerator has to work harder to keep things cooling. Could be so plugged up that it just can't cool like it should any more. Coils should be cleaned once a year, twice a year if you have pets.
