Hi, the problem just started. The washer was working fine but now it stops in the middle of the wash cycle with a slight clicking sound. When manually advanced to the rinse cycle, it fails to drain and fill with fresh water.

I would start by replacing the timer. That is the most likely source of the problem.

Thanks sidfink43. I found out that the washing machine is getting un-stuck when I open up the lid and close it back again. it then runs through the full cycle (after being stuck for several hours). Do you think this might possibly indicate a problem with the lid switch?

It is easy enough to check. Use a jumper wire to bypass the lid switch and see if that fixes things. If it does replace the lid switch as it is a safety item and must be in good working condition.
