My GE icemaker is not working. At first I heard a loud humming sound coming from the fridge. I turned off the icemaker and the noise stopped. I turned it back on, but it makes very little ice, although the water dispenser is working fine. This a ge side-by side model. Any thoughts?

There are gears on the front of the icemaker and sometimes the teeth will break off. Pull the front off the icemaker and see if that is your problem. GE Icemaker Repair Guide

I checked the gears - they are in good shape. I still get the loud humming from the maker

You are probably going to have to replace the icemaker. Jump the icemaker by pulling on the arm that rakes the ice out. The icemaker should start a cycle. If it will not start or gets stuck before completes a cycle replace the icemaker. Even if it works you will probably have to replace it because it is an intermitting problem. You just need to know if you need a water valve or not. Make sure the ice molds are filling with water.
