controls are locked, can anyone advise a solution?

If you have not already tried these,

1. Unplug the machine to see if the controls will free up

2. Check the drain system for any blockage or problems.

If you can get the machine into diagnostic mode you may be able to determine the problem. Here is the tech sheet.

If you cannot get the machine into test mode, a new control board is likely needed, but if you replace it you are doing it on speculation since that cannot be confirmed as the problem.

"On certain Maytag models equipped with an electrical panel, the "controls locked" status light may be lit. If so, press and hold the cycle signal button for three seconds. This will turn off the controls locked feature, resetting the dryer for use."
