Side by side freezer/frig. It is not cooling, the coils inside the freezer compartment are not getting cold. It seems like the compressor tries to start, but then stop within a few seconds. After awhile it will retry. I'm going to pull it out from the wall in the am and take another look. How can I determine if it's the relay/starter or the compressor?

If the noise is from the compressor, pry off the side cover. Take a picture or note down which wires go where, then pry off the start device, a small, black or brown device. With an ohmeter, check resistance across it, should be between 5 and 10 ohms. If open, or you have no meter, just order a new one AP3083556

I pulled off the start device/relay and per another thread here shook it. It sounded like an egg shaker with small metalic parts falling out. I did not bother to ohm check.

I got the part, AP3083556, which has 4 parts - a cover, 2 electrical parts, and 1 small plastic-only piece. My old part was just 1 unit. I plugged-in the two electrical parts. I had to cut off the old connector that had the two white wires going to it and replace it with a bit larger connector to fit over the spade on the new part. But what is that small plastic only part for?

My old one sort of looks like this WHIRLPOOL Overload/relay, part number: AP4077400, but not quite. The part richhappy suggested seems to be working, but I've connected the two electrical parts. I still can't figure out where the small plastic part should go - do I need to?

I assume you stuck the klixon, a narrow white part to the common pin on top and the black ptc device in the bottom two pins.
If so, did you wire in the run capacitor ? Also, how did you know how to wire in the ptc device?

Referencing this diagram, Unit replacement parts for Whirlpool GD25DFXFW02 SIDE BY SIDE REFRIGERATOR | AppliancePartsPros.com, (my model and the unit blowup), I put on parts 13, 15, and 12. 13 was narrow and white and one pin, 15 was all black and 2 pins. 13 went onto the compressor 1st, and then 15. They sort of fit into one another. I put the wires on based on the layout of the old part. Top and toward the door of the frig were 2 white wires. I had to cut off that connector because the spade on the new part (#15) was wider than the old part and replace with a new connector. Top and towards the back of the frig was the blue wire. Bottom was the red wire (red connected to part 13).

There is no capacitor in this area that I can see -- either on the old part, or the new part I installed.

These http://www.appliancepartspros.c...em-number-ap3083556.aspx are the parts I got.
To the left is the cover #12, top center is #13, bottom center is #15, and to the bottom right is the plastic only part that I don't know what to do with.

Is there suppose to be a capacitor somewhere? And is that small plastic part needed?

Looks like you got an extra ptc device, you should be ok if you followed the directions. Apparently your fridg never had a run capacitor, so you are ok there too.

Well.. there were no instructions. None.

That other part is just a piece of plastic. It's the bottom right hand side piece here: http://www.appliancepartspros.c...em-number-ap3083556.aspx

and it's just a piece of plastic -- no electrical parts, etc.

I'm going to ask support for the instructions.
