It would seem to me a leak in evaporator or low pressure side, and low freon charge results in a few inches of vacuum when running, would pull air into system. a sort of self destructive behavior, is this true?

That is correct, once the suction side goes below atmospheric pressure, it will suck in non-compressables that will damage a modern R134A compressor.
