Gene, thanks for the reply. Any hints on getting the motor out. Looks like I may have to remove the drum first.

Gene, thank you very much. I just wish it would have been a switch instead of the motor. The service manual helps a great deal. Barry

Gene, I wanted to let you know that I contacted Whirlpool and they are going to send me a motor at no charge. That's some pretty good cuistomer service on their part.
Thanks again!
Barry

Gene. Gene, I am relatively knowlegable in the "applied sciences" of most things. I am curious, how can a motor be the problem when the motor works? some form of start-up ballast issue? me, I would have guessed a relay or something. if it just hummed, and nothing turned, I would say a belt. looks like I can learn a thing or two from you, I hope. can you give me the reason this would happen? also, since they are sending him a new motor gratis, I am thinking they will be top of my list on my next new purchase. to me, customer service is the key to ownership. someone that stands behind their product. thanks to both of you for teaching me some new things.

A regular simple motor has two windings: start and run, and centrifugal switch. Start winding has a higher torque to start a rotor movement. Power comes to both windings when you push start button. As soon as a rotor got to its normal speed, centrifugal switch interrupts power to start winding while run winding still has it.
If there is something wrong with start winding then rotor can not start rotation because run winding does not have enough torque for it, but because it's powered up - it makes a humming noise.
Gene.
